Pre competitive drills are practices where certain strokes or patterns have to be achieved before playing out the point.
Ton up: Consistency and competitive rally game. 4 strokes must be played between the players before the point can be won. After that the number of strokes in the rally equals the number of points awarded to the winner. The winner is the first player to achieve 100 points. Note: the longer the rally, the less you want to lose it!
Drop & Deep: 2 players on the baseline. One player feeds the ball deep and it is returned, the next shot should be a dropshot which is picked up and returned deep. That player must then move back to play the next rally ball with a groundstroke, and then play the point out.
NBA v All stars: Doubles drill. One pair is fed the ball and must play it from the air to the other pair on the baseline. The NBA (no bounce allowed) team must try to win the point from the net without the ball bouncing. If successful, they play another one, if the lose the roles are reversed and the opposing team tries to win the point from the net. Play up to 11 points.
Double Cross: 1 player v 2. Individual player makes 2 rally strokes to each player , then plays live v both players. Compete up to 11 points then switch teams.
3 & 1: Player 1 rallies 3 balls crosscourt and deep. On the 4th ball he goes for the winner up the line. Variation is the controller can chase down the attacking shot and try to win the point also.
Approach volley & live : Coach at the service line, partner on the baseline. Coach feeds a player on the baseline who hits directly to the coach and moves forward to play an approach volley to the baseline player. The point is then played out between the net player and the baseliner.
